Ok, so we got some puppies over here, they're Black Lab/Australian Shepherd mixes. Most of the time they are very adorable and playful, but they can't quite seem to get the idea of puppy pads. I know that it may just come with time, but are there any tips or tricks that you guys and gals may have to help them get the idea?

I bought some Puppy Training Liquid and if you put a few drops on the Training Pads it's supposed to encourage them to "go" in the right place. So far Jasper has gotten the hang of pooping in the right area but he still pretty much pees wherever/whenever he feels like it... however, every time he looks like he has to go potty I just take him to the bathroom and give him a treat + lots of praise when he does his business in the correct place. He's a bit silly though because he doesn't mind urinating all over his bedding and then sleeping in it! He is getting better though so I think it's just a matter of time. Wink

Yes, the idea is to get him to do his business in one specific area, rather then all over the house, so it's much easier to clean up. He sure does pee a lot and usually there's no prior warning either... lolz Laughing

Soon we'll work on getting him to go outside only, once he can hold himself for longer periods. I've been making a note of how often (and when) he does his business so I can figure out the best times to take him outdoors. So far it's pretty sporadic but he loves to wait until we're in the MIDDLE of a crowd, like Den Haag Centraal train station, to do a nice big poop (after a 30 minute walk through the park in which he showed no interest whatsoever in pooping so we were on the way back home). Rolling Eyes

The main problem is that whenever we go outside everything is just so interesting and exciting that he doesn't really think about doing his business, even when I'm coaxing "Jasper: piddles? poop?" - I think he'll get the hang of it eventually though. (I hope!) hehehe

IMO the best way to get a dog house trained is to take them outside at regular intervals, anything from 1/2 an hour to 1 hr. Any accidents in the house, say nothing, clean up as throughly as possible to get rid of the smell. Anything done outside should receive LOADS of praise and a teeny bit of a very tasty treat. Keep your dog within a specific area whilst perfecting this, whether that be a room such as the kitchen or an area such as a puppy pen or a sectioned off area. Crate training is good for night time as they don't like to soil their own 'area'. During the night you'll prob need to get up to let them out. HTH Smile

Both females were trained while we lived in an apartment, but I just went downstairs.
I never trained the pups for a specific area in the house because imo it is much harder to get them outside from that point. And yes...It meant a lot of time going downstairs Laughing And never said anything excepts "oops" when they did something in the house. Just picked them up again to go outside.
And training outside was just a couple of square meters...Not going for a walk! There is absolutely no point in taking them for a walk because you'll get exactly when Debby said: They will do it the minute you come home...

Just put them on the grass, if necessary take a chair downstairs, ans wait there untill he does something. Then praise him and take him upstairs immediately. Thats how he learns the connection.
