This is really one for us non-Tamaskan owning people but, after reading Juice's great pet names, do any of us have any favourites given to the Tams about the forum?
You (lucky) Tamaskan owners are welcome to give your favs too - well, after your own of course!!
Some of mine are :-
Diesel - Love this name, something a bit "rock'n'roll" about it. It's also funny how "petrol" just isn't the same.
Maguyuk - (Inuit for Howler I think) If you heard someone calling this in the woods you'd know exactly what dog would appear. I like the way it sounds and how it shortens to Magu too - reminds me of Mr Magoo.
Banjo - A real happy sort of name. I get the image of the dog who loves to play (I don't mean the instrument!).
Also how many people had the name before the dog? Come on - own up! I've got one but I'm not telling, I've got some kind of superstitious notion it might be unlucky.

Okay! Some of my favs..mmhhhh. Well..
Tala-I think this name just fits with the breed but then all wolf names do. I also like how it rolls of the tongue.
Juneau- Okay this one took me forever to learn how to pronounce, i eventually wikipediaed it and used the pronuciation guide...It always makes me think of the movie now, but fortunaly this "Juno" won't be getting pregnant.
Luna and Sol- matching names! I love them especially becasue I have a slight obsession with astrology. _________________ -Michelle |

The one name that always comes to mind, is from a book I read many moons ago, CALL OF THE WILD, by JACK LONDON, the name is MYTOCK, I dont know if that is the correct spelling but it means WHITE FANG in INNUIT.

My fav. names are already on my dogs...
And yes... Maguyuk means "howler", and we always shorten it to "Guu" or "Magu"
An other name I really love is Jasper... Very easy name, human name too, but I love it! Would be a name I would consider if I ever had a baby-boy. _________________

When I get a female Tamaskan I'll name her Jade, so I'll have Jasper and Jade. (It would be cool if she were to be a green-eyed Tamaskan LOL... but I'll settle for yellow eyes, since Jasper has brown eyes.)
Eventually I'm also planning to get a "forest brown" Saarloos female and I'd name her Amber.
If I ever got black-grey Tamaskans, I'd name them: Dusk and Dawn.
5 wolfdogs would make a lovely pack but that will have to wait until I live in the countryside. _________________

My favs (so far):
Takeia: I love how the name sounds.
Tumanra (Tums): her nickname sounds cuter though. Is there a meaning behind her name?
Jackal, Dingo & Kenai: love out of pure cleverness. lol!
Odin: sounds very powerful
Names that I'm considering using: (format -- breed : likely name(s))
Rottweiler: Odin (Old Norse: "God of War") /Storm (if female)
Tamaskan (black/grey): Kiba (Japanese: "Fang") / Tempest (French: "Storm")
Tam (red/grey): Enya (Celtic: "Little fire") / Ember (English: "The smoldering remains of a fire") / Effie (Greek: "Fair flame")
Tam (wolf/grey): Zephyr (Greek: "West wind")
I'm hoping to get a pack of all females though...but will also consider males. XD _________________ ~Arie

Hi All,
| Karen wrote: | | And yes... Maguyuk means "howler", and we always shorten it to "Guu" or "Magu" |
Can't you tell I've been looking up all the Inuit/Native American names I can find - particularly with reference to wolves. Does he howl BTW?
| Debby wrote: | | If I ever got black-grey Tamaskans, I'd name them: Dusk and Dawn. |
That would work really well for a brother and sister - very evocative.
| Pete wrote: | | The one name that always comes to mind, is from a book I read many moons ago, CALL OF THE WILD, by JACK LONDON, the name is MYTOCK. |
Will have to read that one, it kept getting referenced in a book I read recently called Wolf Totem.

Looks like you've got this sorted! I had a look at the Norse gods too - wondered if I'd dare name a male Tam as Fenris - mind you he was quite a handful according to the myth! Enya and Zephyr are really lovely.

I really like Dakota which means much the same, but really for the Stereophonics track which I adore. My husband likes it because it's the name of an old plane, but I think someone else has already used it.
Still there is another name we both keep coming back to. In fact we've already started saying things like "If and when we get "...", we'll have to do this." etc. Feels quite natural, so I think this is the one for us.
Still don't want to say, in case it fates something disappointing to happen, but fingers crossed.
Here are some of the other names I was quite taken with...
Tori - Japanese for Bird or English for victorious
Annukka - Finnish for favour or grace
Ndari - Indonesian for full-moon
Tosca - the opera???
Tasha - wolf in Caddo Native American

I always liked the inuit name for polar bear, Nanuq (Nah nook). Atka means guardian spirit in inuit. I also like Kodiak, a bear. Of course some native american tribe names would make good names... Chinook, Apache, Karuk, Shasta, Mohave, Sutai and others. Or even deities... like Kronos or Nyx. |

Yep. My favorites (from my own list, hehe) are Enya, Zephr and Tempest. I'm considering using Aestus for a male Red/grey...but I'm not too sure about it. I like the name Fenris though! (I'm also considering Demon for a male Red/grey. But it may be a bad omen. LOL!)[/quote] _________________ ~Arie

I was going to name my dog Kiba if I got a male or Pandora if I got a female.
I have a huge love of mythology, especially Greek mythology. I even took a class in high school called "Myth and Symbol" though I didn't really learn anything I didn't already know. LoL.
Though I think I might pick a name different from Kiba now. Hmmm. _________________ "Don't feel bad, It could be worse. You could be a worm. They live in the ground and eat dirt!" -- Anon |

Yes he howls... They all do, especially when I leave the house. Drives my husband nuts sometimes And the neighbors...
There are a lot of dogs named Lakota, Dakota or Nakota... Don't let it stop you if you like the name!

Great thread!
Was only talking about Diesel's name yesterday, commenting that Four Star doesn't really work either, but High Octane does kinda fit. LOL
I nearly called Diesel Amadeus. |

Sampo was so named, because I like the sounds of Finnish words. I even bought a pocket-dictionary to find the right-sounding word, with an appropriate meaning. I also surfed-about for deity names from many different cultures, because usually a god represents some clear concept, like bravery, skill, strength etc. This is how I stumbled across the Sampo saga, which could be compared to Finland's answer to King Arthur tales.
In the end, Sampo wasn't actually my favourite-sounding name; it sounds too much like 'Sambo', which the Brits amongst us know is a derogatory word for a certain type of person.
Sampo is a recognised name amongst males in Finland too, but... the concept that the word encapsulates was a winner in the end. He is my bringer of joy _________________ Rgds

I didn't think of Sambo when I read Sampo's name, maybe reading it stops any confusion. I just wiki'd it to find out more - an mysterious object similar to the Grail, but possibly a sort of magical quern.
Incidentally, a week or two ago, I sent an email to Native Languages of the Americas, about female dog names that mean "joy of life" - a bit similar to your "bringer of joy" I suppose. The results are below.......
| Quote: | Thanks for taking part in our fundraiser! Here are our name suggestions for you:
1) Yukpa (pronounced yook-pah, the first syllable rhymes with "book") means "joy" in Choctaw.
2) Halayi (pronounced hah-lah-yee) comes from a Hopi word for "happy."
3) Hanabe (pronounced similar to hah-nah-beh) is a name that comes from the Arapaho word for "happy" or a joyous occasion.
4) One common name for a favorite pet in Native American languages is "little sister." In Lakota this name is Mitan (pronounced mee-tahn) or Mitankala (pronounced mee-tahn-kah-lah.) Or the Shoshone name meaning little sister is Naimi (pronounced nay-mee).
5) Or you could give her a name meaning "wolf," such as the Shoshone name Tsina (pronounced tsee-nuh), Caddo name Tashah (pronounced tah-shah), or Ahtna (Alaskan Athabaskan) name Tikani (pronounced tih-kah-nih).
Hope one of those is what you're looking for. Have a great day!
Native Languages of the Americas |
I've included this as we're now pretty much settled on a name and I thought it might be nice if this thread could be a kind of repository for name ideas. Of the ones I was sent, I really like Hanabe and Halayi (which makes me think of "hilarious"!), and I think I've heard of Mitan and Tikani elsewhere.
Has anyone any more name ideas they'd like to submit? _________________ "Maybe tomorrow I'll wanna settle down." |

Ha ha! We named our Australian shepherd / Lab mix "Fenris" and he's anything but! He's the biggest lover of them all. Only 8 months and already a spectacularly well behaved dog.
Here's a pic

This is a little off-topic, but I hope the owners of the Tams don't mind that I'm use their dog's name in the werewolf story that I'm writing. ^^' I'm really bad at names...
So far, I'm using:
Tolinka (Karen's coydog)
Odin (Liz's dog)
Fenris (coygrl's dog, incidentally. lol.)
Loki (an Alba dog at Harelaw)
I'm also using names I picked out for my future Tamaskans:
Storm
Tempest
Zephyr
Enya

Me again,
Everything today seems Indiana Jones! Can't get away from him, be that work (I'm doing something that involves using stills from the films), commuting (listening to a radio interview with someone who's redone Raiders on a shoestring) and home (my son on the Wii). It got me thinking.
Most people know that ' Indiana' was actually the name Indy's beloved dog, but did you also know that it was really the name of George Lucas' beloved Malumute/Husky cross? Yes, the same one that inspired Chewbacca's weird "woo-woo" noises (as I learned elsewhere in the forum).
Sorry if everyone is now going 'well duh' , but it was interesting news to me knowing the foundation dogs of the Tam.
Anyway I thought there are a lot of place names that make great Tamaskan names, such as:
Alaska
Dinali (National Park in Alaska)
Arizona
Sonora (in Arizona)
Minnesota (Minnie for short )
I suggested these as they all have Wolf populations.
Any more anyone?

Ha ha! We had 'Freyja' picked out for eight months before we got her. We bounced lots of names back and forth once she came home--but our original name stuck. _________________ __________________

Yes, we're the same. In fact our chosen name is also a place name, but has nothing to do with wolves. In fact I've just discovered it also has the nickname "Paddy's halfway house" which is funny as my parents' dog was called Paddy.

Don't mind at all. We got the name Fenris from two places: Fenric/Fenris/Fenrir is a Norse wolf who ate Odin. Also in the first printing of "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" in the US version only, the Chief of Police's name was Fenris Ulf. The reprintings have since been changed back to Maugrim. I think in the old cartoon, his name was Fenris Ulf too. Now I'm showing my age
Ooo! Who has a coydog? Can I see pictures? _________________ __________________

Hi Ratatosk!
I just followed your link to find out more - that's another bit of mythology I've learned in this thread! In fact there's another culture that claims to be related to wolves, the Huns of Mongolia - I wonder if there's a relationship there? Maybe an even older story???
Shows how great an impression wolves had on our distant ancestors; interesting stuff.
