Right now I'm reading Erik Zimens "The Wolf" and I really like it so far.
What's your fav. book about dog training/education?
Which book or website really helped you? Smile

I have read all 3 of Cesar Milan's books and I watch the Animal Planet TV show called "It's Me or the Dog" every saturday evening. As I have not seen the techniques used by Cesar, I can only say that I like (and agree to) the philosophy of maintaining a clear pack order for the dog(s) in a household.

As far as websites go, I do like the puppy raising section of dogbreedinfo.com. Smile

seems like there are a lot of Milan fans here.
I don't know much about him but I don't really like the videos I've seen so far.
I'm not saying that he is a bad guy or that he doesn't know anything about dogs but I just like other methods more Smile

I've read quite a few books on dog training, and strangely enough my favorite so far is "The Idiot's Guide to Positive Dog Training" Probably available in your local library--that's where I found it...and then our dog Fenris bought it for us for Christmas. Imagine that.
It's an easy read--not too technical, and explains why the old method of beating your dog actually works against you. Makes me sad, though, because I know plenty of people who still smack their dog for everything. Shocked We've never hit Fenris and he is the most amazing, caring, loving dog I have ever met. Very Happy Okay, I may be biased, but look up "Sheprador" and you may find out why. (He was a rescue dog from the Humane Society, and is SO sweet.)

As a dog novice I've been reading this too, amongst other dog husbandry and training books - it seems the best one so far from a practical point of view. As we have no Tam yet, I've been practising on the cats with surprising results. Gert will stand and walk (briefly) on two legs, while Bert will shake paws - the downside is they now do it all the time, the greedy beggars! Rolling Eyes
I also have Cesar's latest book "Member of the Family" which proved to be much better than I hoped. I've been a bit wary of his TV series - it's okay but dwells too much on his clients' amazed reaction to their reformed dogs. All a bit too LaLa Land for me.
The book, on the other hand, was great. Much more down-to-earth (except for his wife putting her dog in a dress Confused ) and referenced Bruce Fogle who happened to write the first book I bought.

Arie, have you read the "Pack Leader" one? Do you recommend it? I've been debating whether to buy it from our local Pet Store.

Jan

"Be the Pack Leader" was the first book I read, actually. Haha. It more or less talks about the daily life aspect of human-dog relationships. So, yes, it is definitely worth the buy. Smile I bought it cheaper than the retail price at Amazon.com...free shipping too! (I bought all three books at once.)

I have watched Cesar's tv show a few times and I agree with the majority of the training techniques he uses, he is by far my fav tv trainer yet, but his shows are so incredibly boring that I can't sit and watch him for too long without him driving me crazy and I have to turn over or turn the tv off.
If I was going to buy anyones book it would be his.
I did read the book by the other whisperer listener lady whatever she is called and what a load of tripe, I didn't finnish it, but the first few chapters were enough for me, I feel dumber for reading it.
