Okay, so Tamaskans are supposed to be great with other dogs, and 99% of the time, Wyatt is, however, the following scenario turns him into the most ferocious thing I've seen...I really should get a picture because he looks like a wild Wolf that is about to kill...really.
This has happened twice. First, we were over a friends for doggy play time, and these two dogs get along great, they romp around for hours sometimes, but go to the same dish to drink, no problems, and will sit right next to each other when we give treats. But, last time we were over Wyatt meandered over to Jake's rawhide, and walked away with it to gnaw. When Jake got too close, he got ferocious and attacked. After some time without the bone, I brought it back out to see the behavior more clearly, and to see if it could be curbed. Well, as long as I was holding the bone, both of them would chew on it with no problems, but the minute it was down, Wyatt staked ownership again...
And secondly, last week at our puppy class. Wyatt was stalking around for treats when it was free time for the puppies to roam and mingle (and this boy loves his treats. He won't take his eyes off of a treat for anything.) He managed to make his way over to a corner and a G. Shep in the class approached from the rear/side. Well the hair stood up, down his entire back from neck to tail, and he went beserk. Fortunately, I was able to jump in before anything really happened...
Our trainer says management was really the best way to handle this (i.e. don't leave treats, chews, toys around that dogs could become possessive over).
Anyway, I was hoping for any advice. Is their a way to curb this aggression? There is no aggression towards us in any way, no matter what tasty treat we try and take away.
Sorry that was so long winded!

I cannot be sure it was food-aggression in the second scenario. There are 4 puppies in the class including Wyatt, and he was sort of in a corner, with the other 3 dogs in close proximity. One of the puppies in the class is his friend Jake, the other is a female, which he absolutely loves females, however this third dog he was aggressive towards was an unfamiliar male pup, with only minimal previous interaction.
There is no other form of aggression that he starts. He does occasionally have bouts with my parents dog (a 7 year old beagle mix), they will play for a while and she gets tired. After he continues to antagonize her too much, she gets 'aggressive', but not really ferociously vicious. Once this starts, he returns with his own ferocity. It's mostly snarling, it's not led to any biting/blood/yelping (from pain).
In any case, when ever this scenario happens with another dog, he gets a good 'time-out' session where he's not allowed to move.
No aggression towards people taking anything from him, treats, toys, bones, etc.
Thanks,
Mike |

Juneau wants to guard the water fountain at the dog park. He has done it ever since he was a pup. He will play all day with every dog, but once he stands over the water bowl he thinks it's his. He doesn't do it at home with my other dog though. Silly mutt... doesn't he get that it's just water! I try to tell him, but you know kids... never listen. |

Water aggression is the same as food aggression... I have it over here as well.
At the dog school we always tell newcomers that it is NOT allowed for the dogs to drink with more than 1 at the time. It is easier to teach owners something like that when the dogs are pups than that they get their dogs into trouble when they are adults. _________________

Oh I just make him lay down in a specific spot, usually away from where he wants to be, for a minute or two, giving him time to calm down. If he tries to get up and walk away, I'll lead him back to the spot to stay, until he will wait until I say it's okay to get up. He usually tries to get up a few times, and then he will settle in to place until he's given the okay. |

Okay, I'm more just curious for this one.
Wyatt has met many dogs in his short life, I would say in the range of 1-2 hundred.
This German Shepherd from his puppy class is the only dog that he has ever been aggressive towards, and continues to be any time their too close together.
I'm just curious if anyone else has had an experience like this...?
Literally, it's starting to look like he just hates this one dog for some reason.
In any case, I've read up as much as I could on Puppy Aggression, but it seems like any dog can just not like some other random dog for some reason, and there is nothing you can really do about it...
Oh well!

I've experienced a situation like this with my staffie. She has never shown aggression toward any dog ever. A few month's ago a new Jack Russel came to our Agility Class.
Their first meeting was a friendly one, both dogs were wagging their tails. At the 2nd meeting my staffie just snapped at the Jack Russel. I was really shocked by this as she has never done that before. If the Jack Russel comes too close to her she starts barking to him.
We meet new dogs almost every day, and so far this is the only dog she showed this kind of behaviour to. So I do believe a dog can dislike an other dog for no appearant reason. |

Hmm...could you describe the body language of both dogs? Perhaps that could give us some info about these two little guys and hopefully have some sort of idea as to why Wyatt is being "mean" towards the GSD. If you can get a picture/video of the two and post it on the web, that would probably be best so that everyone can see. _________________ ~Arie
