It looks great fun, I can imagine Tala would love it! _________________ You can say any foolish thing to a dog, and the dog will give you a look that says, 'Wow, you're right! I never would've thought of that!' |

That brilliant.
Althouh I think Diesel would just look at me as if to say, well why should I make the ball fly when you have a perfectly good arm.... LOL
Diesel has very little motivation to play ball games. He may play once or twice to show me he knows what I want him to do, then hell just wonder off and try and find a live thing to play with. |

Hahahaha. That sounds like something Abby will do! Although, I think she likes the ball...just doesn't love it like some other dogs. lol. Odds are, she'll pounce on the box so hard she'll either hurt herself in the process or crash into it. I think we'll try agility and/or dock diving. _________________ ~Arie

Magu had the first principles but my dogschool doesn't have a field at the moment to really lay down a course So no agility and fly-ball at the moment. But Magu seemed to like it! _________________

I sort of have the same problem as Nick, Tala doesn't really retrieve things, but she loves going over the jumps in agility, so not sure if this would motivate her to catch and bring the ball back?! _________________ You can say any foolish thing to a dog, and the dog will give you a look that says, 'Wow, you're right! She loves to crash things, her nickname on the dogschool is 'Bulldozer'
Sometimes she runs trough the jumps instead of going over it.

How does she responds if you throw a ball at her? Does she seems interested in the ball? Will she go after it or will she try to catch it?
The retrieving isn't really important in the beginning. Guess didn't retrieve at first. For some dogs the retrieving of things comes naturally and others have to learn it.
The most important is that your dog likes the ball. If you would throw a ball and your dog would look at you like whatever then I think Flyball wouldn't suit the dog. |

Rahne: So it's OK if the dog even shows a slight interest in the ball, but doesn't necessarily do a full-on retrieve? Abby is interested in the ball and will go after it if it's thrown, but once she has the ball and has run around the yard for a minute or two, she drops it and loses interest...that is, until I go fetch the ball and throw it again.
I went to the local playground with Abby yesterday and she enjoyed jumping over the balance beam they had there. _________________ ~Arie

If you throw the ball and she goes after it then that's great
You should read the tip just above your post from Karen |

Throw one, let the dog chase it and directly show the second one! This way They wont run away with the ball and you can learn them the game isn't over when the ball is thrown...There is even more to come!
Really retrieving is secondary, as Rahne already said |
You know, I thought about this before...and tried it. Abby outsmarted all of us! Here's what happens: Throw ball #1, Abby goes after it. She runs around with the ball in her mouth playing with it by tossing it in the air for her own entertainment (very cute). I call her, she sees the second ball. I encourage her to come to me (she usually does) BUT she drops the ball when she starts racing towards me! D: Defeats the purpose...a bit, on the "retrieve" part. Haha.
Would this be OK for flyball? One of my concerns is that she'll run off to play with the ball by herself instead of coming back to jump over the hurdles like the dog is supposed to do with the ball in her mouth. OR...she'll get the ball out of the box, but she'll leave the ball and just jump the hurdles to get back to me. _________________ ~Arie

She does show a lot of interest in the ball which is great
If she really drops the ball everytime you call her you could try to learn her the command 'hold'. You should give her the ball and if she takes it in her mouth you should say 'hold' to her, wait a few seconds and then reward her for it. If she seems to understand it you could put the ball on the ground and as soon as she takes the ball in her mouth say 'hold' again, wait a few seconds and then reward her for it.
Then you could throw the ball, not to far, and repeat the same routine. |

Don't want to much at once!
The fact that she comes back for the 2nd one is good enough! That is step one! She doesn't have to bring the ball back to you yet!
Getting over the hurdles so much further along the road!
Always stop when the dog is still interested, so after just a couple of times. Don't let the dog loose interest.

@Rahne
Thanks for the tip. I'll give that a try when I go back to my sister's house. At the house I'm staying at for the summer (with my other sister) in another city, we don't have a secure yard - it's only partially fenced.
@Karen
I'm a person who likes to think ahead as much as I can so I was obviously jumping hurdles in my head. Haha. The thing is, she'll play with the ball by herself for a little while and then lay down with it and roll around in the grass. If I show her another ball or pick up the ball she left behind, she'll shoot up like a rocket ready for me to throw the ball again. _________________ ~Arie
