 Hello there!
My name is Jennifer Williams, I am hoping to get a Tama in the future. Right now I have two Goldens. We were going to have a third however, sadly we found out our older golden has cancer and will not make it
My husband and I fell in love with the Tamas when we saw them and have been doing a lot of reading about the breed. I do still have a few questions though.
I know so far there is only 6 offical breeders here in the USA, does anyone know their price range, worked with any of the breeders here in the usa, and know how long any of their waiting list are? If its over a year or two, I would most likely sign up now lol.
In a lot of ways I would love to spread the word about the Tama breed, there is a lot of mis-infomation about this breed. From one woman who I keep bumping into on different forms. She claims the breed should not be allowed to live, due to the fact its only function is looks(she was a hard core Husky lover). From what I am reading now they are great at agility, and training. Not to mention unlike the Husky breed they have better recall off a leash. This breed I feel has a lot more to offer than just looks. Sorry for the rant lol I will stop there
A little bit about ourselves:
We are a very active couple with our dogs, and live more out in the country setting. Right now myself I am finishing up my ABC dog training program and in the future hope to breed my english cream Golden (if she passes all the health tests) for theaphy dogs. Jesse, is a massage therapist, who is also very active. We go camping, fishing, hiking with our dogs not to mention they tend to go pretty much anywhere they allow dogs in. I am also hoping to have our older Golden get into Dock dogs, which is just coming over to New Hampshire now! |

Welcome to the forum, Jennifer!
Sorry about your older Golden. You'll all make it through though, I'm sure.
I'm not sure how long each individual breeder's waiting lists are nor their price range, so I believe it is best to contact them directly using the information provided here: Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! |
As for your rant, I must say that I got into an "argument" with my sister yesterday afternoon about my justifications of getting a Tam in the future. Even though she remains skeptical about the Tamaskan breed, I could really care less about her opinion because I have done my research and know a bit more about the breed than her. Stick to your beliefs, girl!
I heard about the ABC dog training program, but I don't know anyone with a positive experience. Reading reviews online is about the best I could get. Could you tell me a bit more about your own experience with the program?
I have to also note that some states/cities in the USA have regulations or special provisions against the ownership of a wolf-hybrid or wolf-lookalike. I have also seen a regulation in one state (I forgot which one) that prohibits the ownership of any canine if it cannot be distinguished from a wolf based on looks. You may want to look into this - check with the county regulations as well as it may be regulated at a county level if not higher. I know Texas doesn't have any regulations regarding the ownership of wolfhybrid/wolf lookalike, but certain cities and counties near where I live do.
Best of luck in your endeavors and I hope to see you around the forum! Feel free to ask any questions you may have as the people here are very friendly. Enjoy your stay!
PS: Sorry for my long post. _________________ ~Arie

Welcome to the forum.
Some states do have laws on wolfdogs and although Tamaskan have no wolf content it is very important that you go to a registered breeder who will provide you with TDR paperwork to protect you should anyone ask questions about your dog and its ancestry.
If you are worried then let your local authorities know what you are getting. _________________

Mm..thanks for mentioning that part, Jenny. I forgot about one of the most important points! Haha. _________________ ~Arie

So far I am enjoying it a lot more than my Vet tech program to be honest with you all. All the teachers have been kind and understanding, and always would get back to within the day you called or the very next day.
The big thing is doing at least ten hours at a local SPCA or shelter (I just finished mine) during that you train some of their dogs. All ten dogs I worked with all got homes by the end of my ten hours. Which I thought was great.
The other large ending part is the mentorship. Right now I working with a dog trainner who has been in dog training for over 30 years. I come in work with her and later on I will run a few classes. Once she feels I am ready she will send in her report to the school itself. It can take up to 8 weeks but, you are allowed to stay as long as you want. One student stayed with her for a year.
The book work goes over pretty much everything you need to know, even a section how to run your own dog training place. Though I do wish they added more about phylogical part when working with the owners. Its amazing how much a dog will feed off of its owners. If the owner is stress, worried, scared the dog will pick this up.
Once you finish the whole program, they do have extra classes they are adding, right now they have a class "working with sheltered dogs". After I get a bit more money I will pick that up lol. I also heard that they will be adding a thephy dog training class, which I also plan on doing (was hoping that would be up and going before the shelter dog one but, it will come).
Needless to say I really don't have anything bad to say about the school, and the other classmates I have worked with who goes to the same mentor has had no troubles with this school.
All of the reviews I have seen even with the BBA has been of the highest ratings, so I was a bit aw that you heard something bad.
Sometimes online school isn't good for one person and great for another so at this point I would almost have to say it depends on the person(student) him/herself |

The bad reviews I heard were found after doing a google search on the school. The main complaint I heard was depending on the student's location, the school will pair up the student to a trainer when it comes to that part of the program. All the bad reviews I heard were about failure to re-assign the student to a trainer suitable for that individual; and if they were able to re-assign the student, it was extremely inconvenient for the student. In one case, I read the student drove to a different city 3 hours away for 30 minute lessons.
Dog training is something I want to do, but by nature, I'm cautious around online jobs and schools. Haha. Perhaps ABC dog training will be something I'll look into more in-depth later on in life.
Good to hear all 10 dogs you worked with went to good homes! That's awesome. _________________ ~Arie

Yeah, thats odd that happened to those people. Before they even had me sign up for the school they checked out to see how close a trainer was before I filled out any paper work.
My mentorship i normaly six hours non stop one day and a hour the next day for my other dog.
When you do finally call just ask if they do not check ahead of time, and they should state who is around in your area and how far it is. |

Hm..that's really good advice. Thanks! Do you know if they allow the student to pick their own trainer to study under? For example, if I used a trainer for my dogs and I particularly liked their training program, could I request to study under that trainer to complete the mentorship part of the program? _________________ ~Arie

Bascily what they do is that trainers take their ABC test to become an ABC teacher/mentor. This is to make sure that the mentor you want to go to understands their way of training. They are more Postive training... So bascily they will list off the different trainers who have already gotten their ABC mentor certificate. I thought with my luck I would have to go a state over but, oddly enough in this part of NH there was about five different trainers within 30 mins and under near me. |
