Ok Otto is now 18wks, he is doing well even tho he does suffer from seperation anxiety,
He sits and gives paw (each one of them) Sits and wait why we dish his dinner up and waits till we say he can eat it. However we are suffering from him jumping up at people when people come over to see him. If we are in doors and people come round we have told them to ignore him and fold their arms and turn away, it seems to work as Otto gets bored and walks away aha brilliant, But when out in the streets, beach it gets a little embarrassing as because he a rare breed people are always interested in what he is so come up and Otto loves to jump up and lick there faces, I know its a dog thing that they lick faces etc but I cant let him do this as I wouldnt want a dog to jump up at me. So any advice would be much appreciated on how to stop him. I find myself struggling and telling him to not jump but it falls on deaf ears...... in the end I just pin him down holding his collar.

Juneau does the same thing. I have to warn people to watch for the jump. Kisses are fine, but when he jumps up teeth sometimes bump heads, noses... I thought he may grow out of it, but still wants to give everyone love at a year and a half. We try to tell people not to excite him and to be calm, but he is so happy to see people it's hard to get him to calm down. Just wait until your dog is a whopping 80+ lbs and try to hold him down! They are by nature just so loving. |

I remember we had a thread about jumping dogs somewhere in the forum. Give me a minute to search for it and I'll edit in the link.
EDIT: I has found it! Link: Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! |

Yeah theres definately no aggression he just loves to meet everyone on their level.... two feet lol. Just I am worried that one day an Old lady or someone who isnt steady on their feet might come up and he will have them over. I do warn people that he does jump and if they could not encourage it but theres people out there that say ah dont worry I am use to it and let him do it ggggrrrrrrrr
ah well just have to hope that he does grow out of it but will be prepared that he wont and do what you do and say to people that he does jump lol
Thanks for your reply at least I know its not only Otto that does it. _________________ Some People come into our lives and quickly go, Some stay a while and leave footprints on our hearts and we are never the same..... |

Kaz,
I don't believe a dog (regardless of breed) will ever grow out of the jumping to greet people thing. It's not a phase - I see it as an unwanted behavior and I believe the only way to stop it is through constant training and reinforcement.
It seems the curious people are a bit excited when they come up to meet Otto and Otto picks up that energy and reacts to it by jumping in excitement. Perhaps you could put yourself between the approaching people and Otto and just talk to them until the people calm down? Have Otto sit behind you while this is going on. When everyone around Otto (including Otto) is calm, then I see no harm in allowing him to greet people. If he gets all excited at the allowance to greet people, then get him out of the situation - of course, warn people you're going to do that before they take offense in the action. Haha. _________________ ~Arie

I solved the Jumping on people problem with a spray bottle of water.
My Aussie had a bad problem of jumping on people & taught this negative behaVior to Wave. Wave actually did not take this bad habit up unitl he was about 2o+wks old.
Anyhow, we kept a spray bottle with plain water near the front door......if any of the 3 dogs jumped up on anyone we squirted water on them. It only took about 3 times before they understood the consequence of "jumping" with the "squirt of water" to stop.
Worked for us, anyhow? |

Ha, I wished that worked for Wyatt. Not only does he like to be squirted with a water bottle, even in the face. He likes to be sprayed with the hose! He starts attacking the water and once again thinks it's a new fabulous type of game.
I still have to pin him down for greeting new people, but he is getting better, seems it works best if you have unfamiliar people who will work with you as you approach, I generally give a quick preface before we get to close, that I'm trying to nip the jumping habit, and people are usually helpful.
UG...it's already getting hard enough at 50 lbs, I can't imagine 80...

And when he reaches 80lbs, you have about 100lbs to look forward to. _________________ ~Arie

Rather than just trying to stop them jumping up put them in the 'sit' position and make them stay in the sit whilst they are being petted. Dont leave them in this position for too long though as they will get bored. Get them to sit for a couple of mins and then release them from it (by moving away and taking the dog with you) and praise them and then walk away from the people. In the couple of minutes the people will have had plenty of time to say hello. They should then be made to sit every time anyone wishes to pet them. |

Listen to the wise advice Lynn has to offer...she only has over 10 well-trained dogs. Hahaha. _________________ ~Arie
