Hi all,

Sorry we haven't been posting recently, but as some of you may be aware Onai has been seriously ill which required major neuro surgery. The condition was called a anarchnoid cyst which was growing within his spinal cord causing him to lose balance and cordination. Had we left this un -treated he would soon have been paralysed. Fortunatley he was insured which enabled us to go ahead with treatment and although this was a very risky procedure for him the alternative would have been unbearable, at least this way he had a fighting chance.

I must at this point make it very clear that this is a very, very, rare condition which the vet profession believe is not hereditary by nature, and happens while the foetus is forming in utero. There has been no previous occurance of this within the breed or its foundation dogs.

We would aslo like to take this oppurtunity to thank some members of the T D R for the help and support given to us at this extremley difficult time, especially Claire and Lynn .

The good news is that Onai at 6 wks post op is doing well and the vets are pleased with his progress so far. He may never be 100% as far as his special walk goes but hopefully the surgery has permanently resolved the fault in his spine so should not recur. The vet was also concerned that the recovery period may affect his growth pattern but as you can see from the photo's this was not the case....height at shoulder is approx 69 cms and weight is now 24kgs.

All thats missing now is the fur around his head neck and shoulders, but it's growing fast!

Thanks for the update! I'm so glad to hear he's doing better. He looks so much like Jasper, it's startling. His facial expression is almost identical! I can't even begin to imagine what you're going through during this scary time... hang in there and give Onai lots of hugs and cuddles. Poor baby, I really hope he makes a full recovery... time will tell but already it sounds like he's on the right track. Do you think hydrotherapy would help with his coordination?

Thanks for the replies Guys

Yes we can certainly recommend the insurance to anyone who is considering taking it out . Onai's surgery and MRI scans has cost £4000 so far and counting!!!!!

Hydrotherapy is one thing we are considering as we did take our Estrela before he died but unfortunatley there isnt a local facility so its a 40 mile round trip for us . I have in the past considered opening one as a business oppurtunity in our home town as there must be a market for one!

It's a good thing that it was diagnosed and treated soon enough, and I'm relieved to hear that it worked and he's recovering well.
Must be hard for you and him, going through all that...

I hope he keeps on recovering and improving.
