Hi,
My Luna has come into season for thw first time and I would like some advice about how to handle it as we haven't had a girl before. Our other dog Bob has been 'dealt with' as has the dog next door. We are about a mile away from anyone else so not sure Luna would get any unwanted attention, as long as we don't take her out anywhere.

Don't worry
Nothing weird about it. Just don't let her of the leash for some weeks A lot of bitches run off to look for a pretty boy.
For the rest: Just wait till it is over.

Stress: I've heard that Gelsemium 30 (homeopathic remedy) can be quite beneficial as it has calming and relaxing properties.
Unwanted attention: even if you don't take her out there is still a possibility that you might get male dogs hanging around your house but there are scents you can buy that supposedly deter male dogs or mask the smell of the bitch's heat.
Furniture/carpet protection: diaper with disposable liners.

I read to put a bit of Vicks Vapo-rub on the tip of their tail when walking your female to mask the scent of female in heat. However, I haven't tried this yet as Freyja hasn't had her first heat yet.
We do have doggie underwear for her -- and have had her try them on to acclimate her. She does fine with them, as wearing the undies means getting a treat

never tried the doggie underwear, the mop gets a lot more use lol
just to add, you may find male dogs from miles around at your door, we have had large breeds jump the 6' brick wall, and little terriers squeeze under the gate
