O M G... we've just gotten over our little bout with Giardia and now it looks like we've got a ringworm situation... ARRRRG! Does it ever end??

I'll post some pics tomorrow but I'll warn you ahead of time, it's NOT pretty. I can't believe it... both Jasper & Vixen have sores on their faces and I have some on my body / face / legs. The sores pretty much came up overnight... for 2-3 days previously they were just slightly raised bumps but now they are horrible, raw and red. Right now I'm just using vinegar to treat the sore areas, which stings like a b!tch, but first thing tomorrow I'll go to the pharmacy to pick up some special shampoo and some anti-fungus ointment/cream. Does anyone have any advice regarding cure / treatment methods? I want it gone ASAP!

It looks like Gizmo might be getting a patch on her nose too. It looks like I'll be rebleaching everything again for another week... ugh. I guess I'll have to bathe the healthy cats too, just to be safe... oh joy, that'll be fun... Rolling Eyes

I'm 95% certain we got Giardia and ringworm from my boyfriend's friend's kitten that we fostered for the weekend, 2 weeks ago. She'd found it on the street on Thursday, dropped it off at our place on Friday afternoon, went for a weekend holiday and came back on Sunday night to collect it... then took it to the vet on Monday. I really wish she'd taken it to the vet BEFORE she brought it over here... *sigh*

Oh no! I haven't encountered ringworm before (thank goodness), but from the sounds of it, it sounds rather nasty. Probably as bad as Guardia. Sad

I hope the whole family - furries and humans alike - get better very very soon!

I have a question though: why vinegar?

Perhaps the next time y'all take in a pet, make sure they've been to the vet BEFORE taking it into your home...wouldn't want this to happen again if it's preventable.

*sends luff, cookies and other delicious treats to Debby & the gang*

Well, it's equally annoying as Giardia but at least we don't feel sick anymore. It's just itchy and looks terrible, compared to stomach ache and diarrhea, I'd pick ringworm any day... however, I think Giardia is somewhat easier to treat though I'll be able to make a better judgment once we're fully cured.

Thank you! Me too... the saddest part will be not taking the dogs to the doggy park tomorrow evening, like we do everyday. I wouldn't want any other dogs / people to catch it from them so it's better we wait until they are all better. I'm not sure how I'm going to explain it to the doggies though, poor chaps, they love seeing their doggy friends and it's become a routine. I guess I'll take them for a long walk by the river instead.

It has anti-fungal properties and works like an antiseptic... plus we have a bottle of Matija's (my boyfriend) granny's homemade Apple Cider Vinegar in the cupboard, so I figured I'd put it to good use. The dogs really don't like the smell but they are so brave and put up with the stinging like champs. The good thing is that, as it's vinegar, it's non-toxic so doesn't matter if they lick it... but I'm planning on getting something more proper / heavy duty to tackle the problem tomorrow.

Definitely. I just made it the new House Rule. After Giardia and now ringworm, it's just not worth the risk to bring potentially infectious animals into the house. I certainly won't pet-sit any animal that hasn't been vaccinated / seen by a vet first, ever again... that was a big mistake. I just trusted that my boyfriend's friend had seen to it beforehand, since she'd found the kitten the day before. The first thing I do with a sick, stray animal is go straight to the vet and I'd never dump a sick animal at someone else's house for the weekend while I go out partying, especially if that house has lots of other animals. I haven't heard a squeak from her since she picked up the kitten... can't say I'm too impressed.

Thanks, I'll pass on lots of cuddles to the gang... they're looking a bit sorry for themselves. Poor fellas, those sores really do look bad - I don't think I'll have to warn anyone not to pet them in the meantime! lol The ones I've got on me aren't nearly as bad (much much smaller / flatter and more inconspicuous) but I'd trade mine for theirs any day though... I can understand not to scratch and that it'll get better. *sigh*

Both sound pretty much equally as bad (in different aspects) to me. lol. I don't think I deal with pain all too well. Laughing

I'm sure they'd love a walk by the river. It's the next best thing, right? Wink

So, does the smell/taste of the vinegar deter them from licking/scratching the sores? And yes, something more effective sounds like a good plan.

Shocked I forgot teh hugs!! *shoves a mountain's worth of them Debby's way* Pass 'em out for me, please! Very Happy

EDIT:
Do the furry ones like peanut butter cookies (doggie kind)? I made a batch for Abby and I quite like how this batch turned out. Nice and crunchy. In fact, if I didn't know better, I'd eat them myself. haha. (Ingredients: homemade chickpea flour (killed my blender in the process, but...Rolling Eyes), egg, water, peanut butter, lots of luff.)

Oh boy... Sad
Had ringworm several times as a child and seem to be immune to it now. Even the worst ring worm cases (even with hedgehogs) can I treat in the practice without getting anything, where as my colleagues always seem to get it.

We use a certain fluid witch you dilute 1:50, called imaverol (Enilconazol)
Works perfect on humans, animals and even your household.
You can leave a bowl of it standing in the kitchen or something for a couple of days.

good luck!!

Oh Dear Debby you are having troubles. Moral of the story of course is not to take in animals when you have them at home. Even going to the vets beforehand will not necessarily show them as being ill. They could be incubating something. Its ok if you know the animal and it is fine though of course.

Vinegar is used for allsorts. I have a rather good book on all it does. You can use it direct onto stings too and it takes away the inflamation and sting. It is amazing. Hope you all feel better soon x

We had a chinchilla that got ringworm once. It can be a pain because since it's a fungus, it can live on stuff like towels, furniture, etc. Make sure you disinfect anywhere that cat could have been real well.
Fortunately, for chinchillas, the treatment is easy. They take 'dust baths', so you just add some athlete's foot powder to their bath and it clears them right up. Any topical treatment should take care of what's on the animals, but if you use ointments/liquids, make sure you check with someone who knows the proper amount to use. The powders are safe and could probably be helpful if you can get it to stay on the dogs skin for long enough...?
Good luck.

Over the counter products can be very useful . These products can be used for ringworm.

Anti dandruff shampoo containg SELENIUM SULFIDE twice a week is good.
IODINE SOAP rubbed in the infected area.
YEAST INFECTION CREAM containing MICONAZOLE is very good but dont let them lickk it as canmake them sick. so rub well into the area,
and simple washing soda ie in warm water 10% solution. rinse off in 3-4 minuetes, rash will dry upin a couple of days.

hope you get it sorted.
