I'm very interested in the Tamaskan dog and have been looking into the breed. However, I would like answers from people who share their homes with them^^

Recently one of our dogs have passed away and we are looking for a future friend for are other two dogs, a year old Golden Retriever and a 7 year old Golden X Black Lab that I delivered (we used to breed AKC goldens and had a accident when a neighbors black lab came around) I'm 19 and our family has only ever had Goldens, Labs, or mutts containing one or the other. WE decided that it would be cool to own something other then labs or goldens so I went looking around and stumbled on this beautiful breed.

My main question is are they as great a family dog as has been stated?
How is the agression level as there are GSDs in their heritage?
Can I expect them to be anything like my other dogs(golden/lab)?
How are they around small animals/cats?
We own chickens and peacocks and our lab and golden don't even bother them in fact they'll eat the chicken feed along side the chickens XD
How are they with kids?
And the last one, when on walks are people interested in them or afraid of them?

A little bit about where we live:
I live with my parents on 12 acres surrounded by woods. Our lawn is about an acre in size. We have a hiking trial with a small stream we take the dogs down to play. There's also a pond down the road we like to take them to where we throw sticks and they jump in as far as they can. We have chickens that are usually allowed to free range (not lately though as a hwak has been after them). In the winter the dogs love to be harnessed to a sled and thunder down the drive way with me trying to hold on XD

Do you think a tamaskan would fit our family?
Thanks to all who answer^^

Welcome. Please dont get the wrong idea. The German Shepherd behind Tamaskan is many many generations back now. There were in fact only one or two way back so making no difference to todays dog.

I own Otto who is a Tamaskan and nearly 8 Months old now, I have 3yr and 10 yr children, we done alot of research into this breed and loads of other breeds, and the Tamaskan came back as the top one for us. I have owned dogs in the past like a Golden Retriever for 16yrs, Otto is a different breed but very much the same placid in many ways Smile They love to socialise with people and other dogs. Otto is alway heading over to meet other dogs and say hello,
As for going for walks be prepared!!! you will be stopped umpteen times asking what the breed is, I have come to the point of handing out leaflets now as I feel like a stuck record when I take Otto out Smile lol and I havent had one person scared of him, mind you i was at the beach once and a bunch of kids came running over and Otto being Otto was very excited and the girls say is that a Wolf and I was in a hurry and said yes and he is very hungry for little people!! lol but in the end they were all over him and knew i was joking lol

Thats my view on the breed and my experience however I dont own chickens but I'm sure like anything thats introduced at a young age there shouldnt be a problem Smile as for Cats my inlaws live in the cottage on our land and they have 2 siamese cats that are very timid and scraed of anything again Otto just likes to play and chase them to play which isnt good with the cats as they run which makes it worse lol but he has come face to face with one and just sniffed it and submitted himself to it lol

Hope this helps

Good luck
Kaz

Sounds like a fantastic Tamaskan home--some space and other dogs to socialize with.
I have a 9 month old Tamaskan, a 1 year old Lab/Australian shepherd mix, 2 tabby cats, and an 11 year old boy (and a husband). All get along just fine. (Coincidently--we're looking for an old farm out in the country. We want chickens someday, too. My husband discovered he's not a city mouse after all...and we want above and beyond the number of dogs allowed in the city (3))
Freyja is very friendly to people and to new dogs she meets. She is eager to please (sits when asked, comes when we ask)--I've been very impressed with her. She mostly responds more quickly than our other dog. (who admittedly is part lab--so will have the 'puppy sillies' for a while...)

Most people are enthralled with her and ask questions. At the very least people stare at her when we walk by (we walk them in the city--so not everyone is talkative to a stranger walking a "wolfy" looking dog). But when we take them hiking or to the multitude of parks around town everyone asks about her. I kind of feel bad for Fenris, our lab mix, always being left out of the conversation. He's really neat looking too (just like a Catahoola leopard dog if you know what they look like).

Overall, Freyja is smart, and silly and happy to be around us. She still follows me around the house and prefers to be in the same room I'm in--even if I'm just working--she lays there patiently--or snuggles. She loves attention and food and stinky treats (like liver treats or chicken or venison...veggies, fruit, eggs, yogurt, pumpkin...she'll eat just about anything). Freyja makes us laugh on a regular basis. She howls when she yawns -- which we find adorable -- and growls when she does a play bow. But other than that is very rarely vocal. If she barks you know she means something is up!

She loves hiking, and is good with off leash recall. She plays with her toys like a coyote or a wolf plays with a mouse: tosses it up in the air, plays with it, shoves it in the couch cushins...she loves chasing Fenris. She does try to play with the cats--but mostly they just tease her. Freyja does like to "correct" the cats when they do something they're not supposed to (just like a mother dog corrects her pups by putting her jaws around the pups muzzle)...but we just end up with cats who have slobbery faces. Laughing

And of course she's very good at giving kisses. Razz We just love our Tamaskan and can't wait to add more to our family.

Thank you all for the replies. I'm glad they are so happy go lucky dogs^^
I'm going to tell my mom the good news because she thought they looked beautiful but worried about their temperament.
It's not definite as to exactly when we would like to add a new family member but it would probably be this coming spring. I've been reading around the forums and it seems they're hard to find.
We live in Connecticut and if we do decide to open our home to one we want to meet the breeder/puppies/mother dog face to face, that could be a challenge ><

Welcome to the forum,
I took you questions and posted them with my answers below.

1. My main question is are they as great a family dog as has been stated? Yes
2. How is the agression level as there are GSDs in their heritage? Little to no aggression, they will lick you to death with their long tongue.
3. Can I expect them to be anything like my other dogs(golden/lab)? No, They are the most amazing dogs I have ever owned.
4. How are they around small animals/cats? They are great as many people have cats and other small pets with Tamaskans. We own chickens and peacocks and our lab and golden don't even bother them in fact they'll eat the chicken feed along side the chickens XD
5. How are they with kids? Wonderful
6. And the last one, when on walks are people interested in them or afraid of them? Yes, to both. People who are normally afraid of larger dogs will be afraid. Most people are very interested in them and will approach you and want to know what it is or ask you if it is a wolf mix.
