Awww fantastic Jennie
Keep posting these pictures, I love to see how they develop - the pups that is, not the pictures. Love the names too. It's funny really - I kept seeing Wolverine Origins posters and thinking what a great Tamaskan name it would be.
We're getting so excited here in anticipation of one of Susi's pups. We've bought a lot of the essentials now, plus a lot of the unessentials . You know the "oh we've got to get her one of those" type things.
Is anyone else out there about to get one of the current pups? Are you buying any daft stuff too?

Ahh we are having a Susi pup too. We are having a little girly and are getting rather excited now!! We have already got lots of dogs so have got all the essentials but I am still looking forward to getting a new little puppy collar and lead and of course they have to have a new toy of their own etc!
It never gets any less exciting no matter how many you have ,although this my first Tamaskan of course.
I am also busy grooming all the (rather hairy at the moment) doggies so I haven't got to worry about that when i am busy with the puppy and so they all look lovely in all the piccies I want to post when she arrives!!! |

I am desperately excited about getting one of Nevada's puppies, time just cannot go fast enough! I've managed to hold off actually buying anything yet (though I have made a huge list!) but have been reading every dog/puppy training book I can lay my hands on - despite having owned dogs since I was 10.
If anyone has any particular recommendations for books to read let me know - I can't get enough at the moment. I've found Jan Fennell and Cesar Milan the best so far, but not enough practical advice.

Congratulations on getting a Nevada puppy. I hear you will have at least one Tamaskan neighbour down there... I have a Malamute pup going to Cornwall too to a lady who originally booked a Tamaskan haha..
Jan Fennel's books were banned from a lot of dog shops I hear. I must say I dont personally like her methods but you cant go far wrong with Ceasar Milan. I do like his tv programmes too. |

I've also had dogs all my life, but I found:
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Positive Dog Training by Pamela S. Dennison which can be found here:
Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! |
I found it to be right on track with what we were doing in the first level of obedience classes: all positive reinforcement stuff. Our dogs were way ahead of the curve in class because we started using the book about 3 months before class started.
I also really like:
The Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog by Wendy Volhard:

Both are fairly popular and were at our local library.
(like you, I devoured every dog book I could get my hands on...)
good luck! _________________ __________________

Hi Jen, Miffany and Lynn,
Great to hear from fellow people about to get their Tams too.
Possibly the daftest thing I've bought so far is a Snuggle Puppy, it has a heat pad and heartbeat, and is meant to simulate a littermate for those first lonely nights. I suspect it will get torn to shreds over time though. I also think I'm being hopelessly sentimental.
What do you think Lynn?
On books, being a total novice, I've got quite a few too. A couple of Cesar's, a couple on clicker-training (which appears to work on cats too!) and a Bruce Fogle one that seems quite practical on the basics. Mr Milan has grown on me a fair bit - I wasn't sure about the series at first..... particularly the bit about not trying these techniques at home, but I suppose it's to prevent people suing when they get it wrong. His books are great though and quite an insight into dog psychology.
Wow we really can't wait here and it's only three weeks now!
All the best with your pups Jen and Miffany - hopefully we keep can keep in touch through the forum and watch each-others Tams as they grow. _________________ "Maybe tomorrow I'll wanna settle down." |

I think it is a fantastic idea. Better still you could take her to bed with you |

Snuggle puppy is fab idea, I bought when we first got Tala, has the heat pad but not heart beat and she used to love snuggling up to it, was always happy to go into her crate at night!
Need to get it out again for next puppy! _________________ You can say any foolish thing to a dog, and the dog will give you a look that says, 'Wow, you're right! I never would've thought of that!' |

Yes, have to say I have a Jan Fennel book as well and I don't like her methods at all. I do like Ceasar Milans though even if I do find him annoying on tv.
Don't forget Kaz (our tdsgb committee member) who is also down in Cornwall. _________________

Hi jan
Yes that will be lovely to see our pups siblings grow and compare their progress. Hopefully they can meet up at some events too and catch up!!
Just out of interest what is it people dont like about Jan Fennels methods as her and Caesar are both essentially about being an alpha to your dog without being too harsh? |

This is confusing me too - Cesar Milan seems to be saying pretty much the same thing as Jan Fennell, just using different words. It's all about being the pack leader and having happy healthy dogs. |

Thanks for the advice - I've just ordered that one to add to my list - Amazon will be very pleased with me at the moment!

I'm so pleased that Kaz and Otto are down in Cornwall and amazingly we only live about 6 miles from each other! I'm going to visit them soon - not that I've warned Kaz yet! It'll be great to have some Tamaskan company now and again for my pup.
How are they doing Jennie? Any more pictures? Is it okay for me to come and visit them when they are 5 weeks?
I can't wait to bring my puppy home! |

I think some of the stuff Cesar says makes sense, but I don't always agree with his methods.
I personally believe that positive reinforcement is a much more effective way of training. Ignore bad behaviour (where possible!) and reward good. _________________ You can say any foolish thing to a dog, and the dog will give you a look that says, 'Wow, you're right! Nope, not me
We do need a mate for Freyja, but unfortunately have to wait. I was just saying "can't wait" for someday when we add more Tams... _________________ __________________

Well we are having a Blustag pup from Susi and Skye and can't decide on a name at all! Our shortlist is Saskia which is currently the favourite , Taiya ( tay-ya) or Sookie as my husband is obsessed with true blood at the moment (!) but I know the is another one on here and dont want to nick other peoples ideas and cause confusion lol!!
I think we will have to meet her first and see what suits her! |

We're already talking about another and we haven't got our first yet!
On names, I'm still being weird about it - just a personal superstition. Some sort of 'don't count your chickens...' thing about not officially telling anyone her name until she's safe home with us.
Not that it's the most fantastic name in the world or anything!
Mind you I keep firing alternatives at my hubby, but he won't budge. For him the dog's name is settled, and I admit we do both talk of her by name now anyway.
Just thought of another though - Arwen, very LOTR.
And the day gets even closer.....
Jan
